A sump pump is the only appliance in a house that exists purely to matter on one bad night. It sits doing nothing for months, and then everything depends on it during the hour you are least likely to be watching.
Spokane makes that hour predictable. Spring melt raises the water table across the valley, and the pumps that fail almost always fail then, when they are asked to run continuously for the first time since the previous year.
The bucket test
Pour five gallons into the pit slowly and watch. The float should rise, the pump should start, the water should clear, and the pump should shut off cleanly. That is the whole test and it takes two minutes.
If it does not start, you have found the problem in March instead of during a storm. If it starts but keeps running after the pit empties, the float switch is stuck, which burns out motors.
Pumps have a lifespan and it is shorter than people expect
Seven to ten years is typical. A pump that runs frequently sits at the low end. If yours came with the house and the house is fifteen years old, it is on borrowed time regardless of how it sounds today.
The discharge line is where Spokane pumps really fail
This gets overlooked constantly. A pump can be perfect and still flood a basement if the discharge line freezes at the outlet, because the water has nowhere to go and comes straight back. Freeze-resistant discharge fittings exist for exactly this reason and most homes here do not have one.
The other version is a discharge that was never routed far enough from the foundation. The pump ejects water, the water soaks back down beside the footing, and the same water returns to the pit. Some pumps spend their entire lives moving the same fifty gallons in a circle.
Battery backup is not optional here
The storms that raise the water table are the storms that knock the power out. A primary pump with no backup is protection that switches itself off at the exact moment it is needed. A battery backup unit runs for several hours on its own and is cheaper than one basement carpet.
A pump running constantly is telling you something
Either it is undersized for the volume it is handling, the check valve has failed so water flows back down after each cycle, or the float is stuck. All three shorten the motor’s life, and none of them fix themselves.
Nationwide pump service
Roto Master Pump Service handles sump pump installation, battery backup systems, well pump repair and pressure tank replacement across the country if you are outside the Spokane area.
Do the test in March
Not in May, when the melt is already running. Two minutes and a bucket in early spring is the whole maintenance routine, and it finds nearly every failure before it costs anything.
